The most popular stretch of the White Salmon River is the 8
mile run from BZ Corners to Northwestern Lake. This section has lots of
intermediate class II, III and IV rapids (and the class V Husum Falls), the
highlights are listed below. Mile 0: Put in and
get started with a Bang! Top Drop and Maytag Hole are right in front of you as
decend the trail to the river. This class IV rapid section is very tight and
technical. It is possible to put in just below these drops.
Mile 0.5: The Cave. Be careful here as the river turns left
just in front of an undercut located in the right wall.
Mile 1: Grasshopper. Be prepared to get wet and have Fun. This rapid is
capable of dishing out some big hits. Mile 1.5:
Siwash. The river banks off the wall and forms a big hole.
Mile 2: Cork Screw. A series of holes provide the fun here.
There is also a scenic riverside waterfall. Mile
2.5: Waterspout. This is a big hole in the middle of a tight shoot. Hang on
tight! Mile 3.5: Staircase. A series of four
ledges, manouvering is required throughout this rapid.
Mile 4.25: Highway Hole. Wake up and paddle...
Mile 4.5: Husum Falls. This class V, 8 to 10 foot waterfall is a thrill
you will not soon forget. The locals only run this when the gauge is below 2.5
feet. Mile 5: Rattlesnake. Another drop into a
big hole. Mile 6: Deadmans Corner. Stay off the
left bank here. Mile 7: The Castle. OK it's not a
rapid but it is a cool building on the left bank.
Mile 8: Northwestern Lake. Take out at the park here at the upstream end
of the lake. |
